Questions people ask
How do I find a company's NAICS code?
Type the company name above. The codes come from its federal SAM registration, which is the company's own declaration and the same record a contracting officer reads.
Why does a company have more than one NAICS code?
Because most businesses genuinely do more than one kind of work. A company registers every code that applies, and each one is a separate stream of contracts it can be shown.
What is a primary NAICS code?
The one the company nominates as its main line of business. It matters for size standards and for how the company is categorised, but it does not limit what it can bid on.
Is this the same as the company's SIC code?
No. SIC is the older system, largely retired in federal use. NAICS replaced it and is what federal contracting runs on.
The company I want is not here. Why?
Only companies registered in SAM appear, which means only those set up to do business with the federal government. A company with no federal work will usually not be registered at all.
Can I look up a company by its code instead?
Yes. Paste a CAGE code or a UEI into the box and it returns the company, along with every NAICS code it registered under.
