Questions people ask

What is a UEI number?

A twelve character Unique Entity Identifier that SAM issues to every organisation registered to do business with the federal government. It replaced the DUNS number in April 2022 and is now the identifier agencies key on.

How do I find my UEI number?

Type your company name into the box above. It comes from your federal registration, so it is the same value SAM shows you when you log in.

Is a UEI the same as a CAGE code?

No. The UEI is twelve characters and comes from SAM. The CAGE code is five characters and comes from the Defense Logistics Agency. Most registered companies have both, and you can see both above.

Do I need a UEI to bid on a federal contract?

Yes. You cannot be awarded a federal contract or be paid on one without an active SAM registration, and the UEI is how that registration is identified.

What happened to the DUNS number?

The federal government stopped using it in April 2022. If a form still asks for a DUNS number it is out of date, and the UEI is what you give instead.
